Spring has finally sprung. With warmer temperatures on their way, schools are closing for spring break and families are beginning to plan their summer getaways.
Crazy work schedules and endless responsibilities can make leaving for vacation a bit nerve-wracking. Wondering if you forgot about important deadlines or meetings can be enough to stress you out and ruin your vacation.
This is why we’ve put together a short list of some things you should do before you leave the office.
1. Turn on your automatic Out of Office replies
These automated responses help notify everyone who emails you that you are away. Make sure you include the dates you will be out, any alternate contacts and if you will be able to check emails while you’re gone.
2. Update your voicemail
Some people will choose to call you instead of sending you an email. You want to make sure they are also aware of your time off. Update your voicemail with any pertinent information. If you happen to be taking calls while you’re away, make sure you forward your business phone to your mobile line.
3. Update your calendar
Select the dates when you’ll be away and schedule an out of office appointment. This will quickly alert colleagues who are scheduling meetings of your absence. This can also assist you in seeing any meetings you may need to reschedule or decline invitations to.
4. Clean your inbox
Depending on how long you’ll be gone, you may want to archive or delete some messages from your inbox. You don’t want to miss any important emails while you’re away.
After you’ve enjoyed your relaxing vacation, it’s time to get back to work. When you return, don’t forget to turn off your out of office notifications and change your voicemail back to the original greeting.
If at all possible, try not to schedule any meetings the morning of your return. You may have a lot of emails and other requests to catch up on and it’s much easier to get through them all without any distractions.
